“Literature is one of the most interesting and significant expressions of humanity.”                     —P.T. Barnum

Widows and orphans are the single lines and words at the beginning of a page or end of a paragraph left dangling out in no man’s land. They are the bane of publishers everywhere. Similarly, this “Widows and Orphans” blog is for those English lovers who live their lives out in no man’s land, those who appreciate everything the English language has to offer, including the widows and orphans.

“Widows and Orphans” is run by the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay (UWGB) English Department and the UWGB Creative Interns. We wanted to spread the word of UWGB English while creating an online community for our current students, prospective students, alumni, sponsors, faculty and staff—really, the entire world—to share the love of books, literature, words, and all things English.

We have a how-to section, alumni features, calendar of UWGB English and community events, our “Indented” podcast, and more. If you love English as much as we do, then you are in the right place.
